Juniors Get a Jumpstart on College and Career Planning

A counselor talks with five students about preparing for their senior year.

Solon High School juniors took an important step toward life after graduation during the annual Junior Jumpstart program, held Dec. 5.

Counselors guided students through key features of SchooLinks, the college and career planning platform they use throughout high school to explore careers and colleges, track graduation requirements, and keep their résumés up to date.

“The goal is to get our students on a jumpstart path to their post-secondary planning, whether that includes college, the military, entering the workforce or taking a gap year,” said Director of School Counseling Ann Trocchio.

Students also received a checklist of key steps, including attending college representative presentations, identifying teachers for recommendation letters and exploring scholarship opportunities. The checklist helps them stay organized as they prepare for senior year.

For students who feel overwhelmed, counselors offer support and reassurance. “We acknowledge how they feel and let them know we’re here to guide them all the way,” said Trocchio.

Solon’s counseling team works closely with students and families throughout high school to ensure they have the information and support they need.

“Our students are very well prepared,” Trocchio said. “From the day they enter Solon High School, we start getting them ready for their post-secondary planning over the next four years.”

Trocchio added, “It’s our passion and goal to ensure we’re giving students the resources and information they need to be even more successful.”
