SHS Spanish Culture Club Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month Display

It's National Hispanic Heritage Month, and Solon High School’s Spanish Culture Club is celebrating by highlighting the rich traditions and contributions of Hispanic culture.

The club created a colorful display in the Comet Hallway featuring posters of Hispanic athletes, artists, restaurants, and influential people with ties to Cleveland. Along with colorful decorations representing Hispanic culture, the display features spotlights of SHS students and staff. These highlights share each person’s country of origin and favorite traditions.

“Our mission is to make Solon High School a more inclusive place for people of Hispanic heritage and to create a safe place for everyone who wants to learn about and celebrate Hispanic culture,” said club officer Bella Roberto.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from is September 15 to October 15, the club is engaging classmates with stickers, Chupa Chup lollipops, and trivia posted on its Instagram account.

In partnership with the SHS Courier, the club also coordinated an interview with Cleveland Cavaliers broadcaster Rafa Hernández Brito, who reflected on his Salvadoran heritage and its impact on his life and career.

Looking ahead, the Spanish Culture Club is planning more events, including cookie decorating for Día de los Muertos. “By mixing education with fun activities, we’ve found that our club has had a greater impact on other students,” said Roberto.

“We hope our emphasis on the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month will help to make our school a more inclusive community,” Roberto added. “By sharing cultures and appreciating each other’s heritage, we can grow into a more diverse and accepting school.”
